Sine Qua Non is one of California's most famous wine producers. Based just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, and with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara, it eschews the usual image of top California wine as being only from Napa Valley. That is not the only thing eschewed at Sine Qua Non – the same wine is rarely made more than once, turning the idea of the American icon wine on its head.

Next of Kyn is the newest venture of Manfred and Elaine Krankl, the couple behind the cult winery Sine Qua Non, based on California's Central Coast. The always innovative and envelope-pushing Krankls say they named their new label Next of Kyn because although related to SQN, it is nevertheless its own new enterprise. They say they also hope that one day one of their five children will take over Next of Kyn, making it a part of the SQN family in the most fundamental way. The 2007 Next of Kyn was their first vintage, and the Krankls say they will not necessarily have an annual release. It will depend on such factors as the available grape harvest. The 2007 is 92% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 2% Roussanne, most of which came from their own very small parcel in the Santa Rita Hills. The wine is released only to the Krankl's mailing list.

The 2007 Syrah Cumulus Vineyard is a meaty, earthy effort representing a hypothetical blend of a northern Rhone with the exuberant, unabashedly ripe, juicy fruit of California. Jus de viande, damp earth, black currant, and blackberry notes along with good minerality and an absence of oak are all present in this full-bodied Syrah. It still has some tannins to resolve, but it is a big, full-bodied, classic, promising debut effort from the Cumulus Vineyard. It should drink well for at least a decade. This is the debut release of the Ventura County home estate of Manfred Krankl's vineyard, which is a separate entity from his Sine Qua Non wines. Composed of 92% Syrah, 6% Grenache, and 2% Roussanne, there are 125 cases of this cuvee, which is to be released in Spring, 2011. Krankl is furiously planting vines on these relatively steep hillsides near his home ranch. In addition to Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, he is also planting Touriga Nacional and Petite Sirah. RP
