Shafer Vineyards is a family-owned wine producer in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley. It is particularly known for its Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, regarded as one of the very finest wines in California. With the first wines appearing in 1978, Shafer Vineyards is one of the founding estates of – and a benchmark in quality for – the Stags Leap District AVA. The scores for Hillside Select have been incredibly consistent in the 97 to 100 point range.
Shafer has around 140 acres of vines in the Stags Leap District, spread out across several vineyards. The Hillside Estate vineyard has shallow, free-draining soils tha produce small, intensly flavored berries. The best blocks are used to make the Hillside Select, a plummy, cherry-laden wine with ripe tannins that will age well for a decade or more.

Robert Parker | 95 RP - I was blown away by the brilliance of the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon. Loaded with fruit, this blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and tiny dollops of Cabernet Franc and Merlot tips the scales at 14.8% natural alcohol, all of which is hidden beneath a cascade of gorgeous black currant fruit intermixed with toasty oak and hints of charcoal and pen ink. Exhibiting a full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously textured mouthfeel, it is a pure, dense, classic Napa Cabernet that should drink well for another 10-15 years. I wish I had realized what a great wine this was early on, as it was never that expensive. |
