1999 Sine Qua Non Icarus Grenache
The 1999 Icarus (a blend of 80% Grenache 18% Syrah and 2% Viognier three-fourths from the Alban Vineyard and one-fourth from the Stolpman) was closed on the two occasions I tasted it. Its deep ruby color is accompanied by sweet black cherry and kirsch-like aromas with an underlying peppery earthiness. Full-bodied and moderately tannic it is an austere and tightly knit offering. Like It should be decanted 45 minutes prior to consumption as these wines beg for aeration. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. One of the world's most creative wineries Sine Qua Non is turning out world-class wines of extraordinary complexity and individuality. RP
