2003 Domaine de la Janasse CDP Cuvee Chaupin - 95 Pts!
There are 1200 cases of the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin. Essentially 100% Grenache from old vines and low yields aged 70% in neutral wood foudres and 30% in old barrels it tips the scales at 15.7% alcohol. This spectacular effort may be the finest Chaupin produced since the fabulous 1998 which by the way offers terrific drinking. The dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Chaupin offers attractive aromas of ripe raspberries intermixed with notions of orange marmalade black currants licorice and smoke. Dense full-bodied fleshy flavors cascade over the palate along with a wealth of glycerin fruit and alcohol. The finish is seamless as well as long. This 2003 will be delicious young and should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. By the way visits to this estate are well worth the trip if only to purchase wine and visitors should be sure to ask to taste the rarest wine made by Janasse a late harvest sweet cuvee of botrytised Clairette and Roussanne called Les Raisins Perdu. It is an impeccably well-made intriguing offering but there is very little produced and it is only sold at the winery. RP
