Rating 98 RP - 1996 Marcassin Estate Pinot Noir - 98 pts! The 1996 Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir (275 cases) has just been released. Made from a Sonoma Coast vineyard, it represents a synthesis in style between a profound grand cru Burgundy (Clos de la Roche and Clos St.-Denis come to mind) and a pure, ripe, rich, unmistakably California offering. The dark plum-colored 1996 exhibits an explosive nose of kirsch liqueur, jammy cherry fruit, prunes, Asian spices, smoke, minerals, and vague damp foresty scents. Exceptionally rich and full-bodied, with enough acidity, tannin, and wood to frame its copiously-endowed personality, this is a riveting Pinot Noir that proves just how special Sonoma Coast hillside terroirs can be. Although it will be approachable in its youth, it will evolve gracefully for a decade or more. For its size, richness, and intensity, this Pinot Noir is impeccably balanced, with no component part out of sync. The only way to describe this wine is to quote the Beatles - "ubladi, ublada." RP
